In order to be able to dress an actor for film that do not play in the present, authentic historical dress must be recreated; thus a costume designer needs a broad knowledge of historical dress. Fashion and clothing styles must be meticulously researched. A period costume in a film is despite being somewhat authentic, always reflects the time in which the movie is produced and current fashion.
