A film genre in which the individual, society and the environment is in most cases set in the future or located, geographically or historically (often radically so) in an alternative universe or another planet. These include for example films about life in outer space, an post-apocalyptic Earth following e.g. a nuclear disaster or the clash of extra-terrestrials and people on the earth.
