In film and television, a production designer is the person in charge of the overall look of a filmed event such as films, TV programs, music videos or adverts. The production designer is performing one of the key creative roles in the creation of motion pictures and television: He stands in direct contact with the director and producer throughout the production, and assumes the task of choosing the settings and style to visually tell the story. The term "production designer" was coined by William Cameron Menzies during the production of Gone with the Wind. Alternatively, people with the same responsibilities are commonly referred to as "art directors."
