At the beginning of a narrative, the exposition is the author's providing of some background information to the audience about the plot, characters' histories, setting, and theme. The term originates from the field of literature, and applies for film in exactly the same way: A film’s exposition introduces the viewer to the premises, which are relevant for the understanding of the developing plot.
