The term reference is used in many spheres of human knowledge, adopting shades of meaning particular to the contexts in which it is used. A filmic reference is a (often subtly used) visual or verbal quotation of a scene or character from another film, which may act as a tribute to a respected actor or fellow filmmaker, or simply as an ulterior wink to the spectator.
