A Gaffer in Film, TV and Theatre is responsible for the design, rigging, operation and maintenance of the lightning equipment. This includes in particular, spotlights according particular lighting requirements or the provision of mood or lighting appropriate to a setting or situation. In Film and TV productions the Gaffer works closely with the camera Department who are responsible for creating the "look" of the film. As a rule it is the Chief Lighting Technician "Gaffer" (Oberbeleuchter) that interacts with the Director of Photography (DP) and the Key Grip. The Grips (electric) are responsible for lighting rigging. A Best Boy in English is the assistant to the Gaffer.
