Glossary: Boom

A staff that usually has a telescoping facility on the end of which a microphone can be attached. This enables the Sound man to place a microphone near the actors without entering the frame, and also enables better quality and more accurate Sound. With the help of the boom the Sound man can follow the Sound of a scene very closely dangling the microphone right near the source of the Sound.
